SHOCKING: Abuja court orders minor to be given 12 strokes of cane for enjoying crime proceeds

An Upper Area Court in Zuba, Abuja, ordered that a 16-year-old boy be given 12 strokes of the cane for collecting N500 proceeds of crime.

Delivering judgment, Mr. Gambo Garba gave the order after the minor had pleaded guilty and had asked the court for leniency.

Garba said that the punishment would have been stiff if the minor had not saved the court the rigour of protracted prosecution.

He warned him to desist from committing crimes or collecting proceeds of crimes henceforth.

The judge also gave the minor a strong warning to be of good behaviour before his parents and the society

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Chinedu Ogada, had told the court that the complainant, Adene Ojo of Anagada Green Garden Area, Abuja, had reported the matter at the Zuba Police Station on August 3.

Ogada said that another minor and an ex-convict, Faruna, broke into the complainant’s house and stole a Tiger generator, electrical materials and other valuables all worth N200,000 property of the complainant.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 288 of the Penal Code.

The minor, who was in tears, told the the court that he did take part in the burglary.

“I did not steal sir. I was at home when Faruna came to our house and gave me N500 to buy food.

“I did not know where the money was from. I am very sorry sir. I will not do it again,” the minor begged the court.
