SUNDAY SCHOOL OUTLINE FOR 12TH MARCH, 2023

TOPIC: THE PRIDE OF BELSHAZZAR

TEXT: DANIEL 5:20-27; 30

MEMORY VERSE: Daniel 5:20, “But when his heart was lifted up; and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.”

OBJECTIVE: So that the class can understand that whatever that prevents one from acknowledging God as supreme is an enemy.

LESSONS:

  1. KING BELSHAZZAR FAILED TO LEARN FROM HISTORY
King Belshazzar, the successor of Nebuchadnezzar, knew about his father’s rise and fall, yet, he let pride which caused his father’s downfall sometimes to mislead him, so that he and his cohorts drank wine in his party with the sacred vessels his father carried from God’s Temple in Jerusalem and glorified his gods instead of God who gave him life. Thus, in the middle of the event, he saw a human hand writing on the wall; “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin”. Meaning, ‘Mene’ – God has numbered the days of your kingdom, ‘Tekel’- you have been weighed in a balance and found blamable; ‘Peres’ – your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians. So he became terribly afraid and sought his wise men for its interpretation but they couldn’t until Daniel arrived. Afterwards he was killed.
Notice that, the king did not realize that judgment day would come, and that the God that lifted him can dethrone him at will.

2 . USE YOUR POSITION WISELY
The God of Heaven gives positions to men so that they can use it to glorify him. But when they fail the test, He causes their downfall. Moreover, judgment can suddenly come and there will be no time to repent or escape.

3 . GOD WILL CALL ALL TO ACCOUNT
Be careful to acknowledge God above all that he gives you, because of a day of reckoning. The king never knew that he can be dethroned and killed. Had he known it, he would not have toyed with God’s vessels.
Which of God’s vessels in your life do you play with and not glorify Him through them? Could it be his gifts in you and the opportunity of life, which you refused to serve Him with? But be warned, for God’s day of accountability can come unexpectedly.

CONCLUSION
Of what use is knowledge to a person who fails to use it to his advantage. Belshazzar knew his father’s history and refused to learn from it due to the pride of his heart. No wonder James 4:6 says, “God resists the proud but gives more grace to the humble.
